Back in June 2010, when Bobbito Garcia and I got on our bikes to explore New York City’s basketball culture, we didn’t really know where it would lead us. On May 1, 2013, we gave life to an 85 minute documentary that revealed the essence of the game as well as the common denominator that unifies every ballplayer on earth: pick-up ball.

SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN!

Summer of 2011. Rikers Island Prison Yard, Queens. Inmates played a 4-on-4 in 100 degree weather, went hard, and had fun. The correction officers explained to us that basketball actually helps keep violence down, even amongst the toughest incarcerated population.

Summer of 2010. West 4th St a.k.a. The Cage, Manhattan. Milwaukee Bucks starting point guard Brandon Jennings got on the court, won four games in a row, locked down his opponent, and showed the crowd just how much an NBA player can be dedicated to playing pick-up.

Supreme Courts
Co-directors Bobbito Garcia and Kevin Couliau visited 180 courts throughout NYC’s five boroughs to create their debut documentary, revealing their gorgeous geometrical structure and place amongst the city’s overall landscape.

Bill Robinson Playground, Harlem. Mid-1970s.
Rucker Park legends Julius “Dr. J” Erving and James “Fly” Williams play a 3-on-3. The “Doc” takes flight, and BAM! This is the same ha-ka that the world would see Erving do on Michael Cooper years later during the 1983 NBA season, when he led his Sixers to a championship title over the L.A. Lakers.
